Collaboration Spéciale : Nairi K
The Black Lips are renowned for their memorable live performances. It’s ironic, given that I don’t recall much of their March 2010 show at the Studio Juste Pour Rire. I recall getting fairly intoxicated with my friends, watching kids stage dive like there was no tomorrow, and partying with the boys until 5 in the morning.
Things haven’t changed that much in a year, despite their constantly growing fan base. Though I kept the drinking on the down-low this time, I could tell the boys hadn’t. Clearly under the influence, they played a great rough and tumble set, breezing through classic tunes like “Not A Problem,” as well as new track “Go Out and Get It!” while the adoring crowd caused a fine ruckus. I’m almost surprised they didn’t miss a chord given the crowd’s antics onstage (one girl jumped up to steal a kiss from each member; stage divers were so numerous security would push them offstage), but then, these guys love what they do, and played with the energy and fervour to reflect that. The light show was a bit off-putting, as I can’t think of anything less punk rock, but there’s nothing quite like watching one of your favourite bands tear it up nice an’ good.
The Vivian Girls played a good mix of their repertoire, but they looked half asleep, which comes as no surprise given what their records sound like. Unfortunately I missed Davila 666, who were apparently the highlight of the night. Check it: Six Puerto Rican brothers play garage-infused punk rock, singing in unison (kinda) in their native tongue. Give them a listen, you won’t regret it.
