The most blogged-about band of 2010 according to Hype Machine was in town on Wednesday. An eclectic array of young persons amassed inside the Club Soda, escaping summer heat to benefit from a new kind of humidity, provided in part by their buzzband-loving peers.
Yeasayer arrived on stage late but not very fashionable, in an off-putting nonchalant manner. They could have pretended to be excited… at least a little. No matter. The single ‘Madder Red’ started off their set with aplomb, and the crowd warmed up to the bass drum-heavy beats. Rather blasé itself, the crowd was somewhat of a fair-weather friend, acting ecstatic at the sound of favorites such as ‘Rome’ and ‘O.N.E.’, but detached-bordering-on-mean during new or unreleased songs. Talkers and beer-orderers sadly missed out on interesting new tracks, until a loud and rhythmic version of Mondegreen grabbed everyone’s attention. Nevertheless, Yeasayer kept the fun reined in, and drummed out all its hits in fifty minutes flat.
Between tunes, lead singer Chris Keating let us know that his first make-out session was held with a girl from Montreal, and how exciting that was. Perhaps he should have kept some of that passion for the rest of us.
